How long does it take to donate blood?
The entire process takes about an hour, but the actual blood donation only takes about 10 minutes. The rest of the time is for registration, health screening, and recovery.
Does it hurt?
You may feel a slight pinch when the needle is inserted, but most donors report that the process is relatively painless.
Is it safe?
Yes! All equipment is sterile and used only once. You cannot get a disease from donating blood.
How much blood is taken?
About 1 pint (roughly 500ml) of blood is collected during a whole blood donation. Your body replaces the fluid within 24 hours.
How often can I donate?
- Whole Blood: Every 56 days (8 weeks)
- Power Red: Every 112 days (16 weeks)
- Platelets: Every 7 days, up to 24 times per year
- Plasma: Every 28 days

Before Donating
What should I eat before donating?
Eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water. Avoid fatty foods right before donating.
Can I donate if I’m taking medication?
Most medications don’t prevent you from donating. However, some medications require a waiting period. Bring a list of your medications to discuss with staff.
Should I drink coffee before donating?
Yes, but also drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is important.
During the Donation
What happens during the health screening?
Staff will:
- Check your temperature, blood pressure, and pulse
- Test your hemoglobin level (iron)
- Review your health history
- Ask about recent travel and medications
Can I use my phone during donation?
Yes! Feel free to use your phone, read, or watch videos during the donation.
After Donating
What should I do after donating?
- Drink extra fluids
- Avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day
- Keep the bandage on for a few hours
- Eat regular meals
Can I exercise after donating?
It’s best to avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day. Light activity is usually fine. If you need us to write you a pass for any classes you have which would normally involve this kind of activity, please let the staff know before your blood donation.
Will donating affect my athletic performance?
You should avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day after donating. Most athletes can return to normal training the next day, though some prefer to wait 24-48 hours.
What if I feel dizzy?
Sit or lie down immediately. This is not uncommon and usually passes quickly. Drink water and eat a snack.
When can I donate again?
You can donate whole blood again after 56 days. You’ll receive a reminder card or email when you’re eligible.

Where does my blood go?
Your blood is tested, processed, and sent to local hospitals where it’s used for patients in need.
How many lives can one donation save?
One donation can save up to 3 lives! Different blood components (red cells, platelets, plasma) can be used for different patients.
What blood type is most needed?
All blood types are needed, but O- is especially important because it’s the universal donor type. AB plasma is also in high demand.
