The Donation Process
Donating blood is a simple, safe process that typically takes about an hour from start to finish. Here’s what to expect:
Before Your Donation
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your donation
- Eat Well: Have a good meal before donating
- Get Rest: Try to get a full night’s sleep before your appointment
- Bring ID: You’ll need to show a valid photo ID or Red Cross donor card.
- Your Student ID is NOT an acceptable form of ID becuase it does not show your date of birth. Georgia IDs or Drivers Licenses are acceptable.
During Your Donation
- Registration: Check in and show your ID
- Health Screening: A staff member will review your health history and take vital signs
- Donation: The actual blood donation takes about 10 minutes
- Refreshments: Relax and enjoy snacks and drinks in the canteen area
After Your Donation
- Rest: Sit for at least 15 minutes before leaving
- Stay Hydrated: Drink extra fluids for the next 24 hours
- Avoid Strenuous Activity: Take it easy for the rest of the day
- Remove Bandage: You can remove the bandage after a few hours
What to Bring
- Valid photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or other form of photo ID with your date of birth (NOT your Grayson Student ID))
- Red Cross donor card (if you have one)
- List of any medications you’re taking
