Donor Information

What to know before you donate

The Donation Process

Donating blood is a simple, safe process that typically takes about an hour from start to finish. Here’s what to expect:

Before Your Donation

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your donation
  2. Eat Well: Have a good meal before donating
  3. Get Rest: Try to get a full night’s sleep before your appointment
  4. Bring ID: You’ll need to show a valid photo ID or Red Cross donor card.
    • Your Student ID is NOT an acceptable form of ID becuase it does not show your date of birth. Georgia IDs or Drivers Licenses are acceptable.

During Your Donation

  1. Registration: Check in and show your ID
  2. Health Screening: A staff member will review your health history and take vital signs
  3. Donation: The actual blood donation takes about 10 minutes
  4. Refreshments: Relax and enjoy snacks and drinks in the canteen area

After Your Donation

  1. Rest: Sit for at least 15 minutes before leaving
  2. Stay Hydrated: Drink extra fluids for the next 24 hours
  3. Avoid Strenuous Activity: Take it easy for the rest of the day
  4. Remove Bandage: You can remove the bandage after a few hours
